NWONE 2012 Annual Awards
It is once again that time of year when we solicit nominations
for the NWONE annual awards program. This year our awards dinner
will be held on March 15, with Lee Woodruff, national speaker,
author and wife of Bob Woodruff ABC new anchor who was seriously
injured during the Iraq war. We hope you won't miss this event.
I have attached for your review the nomination forms with award
criteria for all 5 of our NWONE awards:
Many of us have experienced sitting in an awards program and
thinking "gosh these folks are great but I know ______ and s/he
should really get this kind of recognition". We often go home
committed to writing an award nomination for that person we
admire... and then get busy and soon forget. I am challenging you
to remember who you believe is worthy of recognition and to take
the time to nominate them for one of our awards. There are few
things as honorable as recognizing and rewarding the contributions
of a professional colleague. It is also something you can do for
FREE! All award nominations must be postmarked by February 1, 2012.
We look forward to receiving your nomination and to seeing you in
March at the NWONE awards dinner. Thanks for taking the time to
consider recognizing someone you admire.
Congratulations to 2011 Award Winners!
Congratulations to the following individuals who received
awards during the NWONE Spring Conference!

NWONE Invitational Retreat Summary
For the second time this year, the NWONE Board of Directors
invited nurse leaders from across our membership to join them in
dialogue. The idea of hosting invitational retreats grew from
member requests for an opportunity to be more involved without
formally becoming an organizational leader. On November 10,
2011, the NWONE Board of Directors and guests gathered together in
retreat at Seattle's Hotel 1000. The day began with a
presentation from Carolyn Corvi, recently retired Vice President
and General Manager of Airplane Programs at Boeing. Carolyn
spoke about what it means to be a transformational leader and
illustrated this through her experience at Boeing. Following
Carolyn's talk was a presentation from Barbara Trehearne, Vice
President for Nursing and Quality and the Chief Nurse for Group
Health Cooperative, and Barbara Hyland-Hill, Director of Nursing
Operations at Group Health Cooperative. They spoke about
nursing leadership in a reformed health care environment addressing
the movement from hospital centricity to ambulatory care, home
care, and self care settings. After these presentations, the
group of 53 people broke out into small groups to discuss how NWONE
can build transformational leaders within its membership and how
NWONE can strategically position itself for the changing health
care environment in order to better serve our members. After
the small groups had a chance to discuss and brainstorm, everyone
was brought back together and asked to share their ideas.
Demonstrating the true power of the collective, the groups came up
with a host of insightful recommendations for NWONE Board of
Directors. These recommendations are being used to reshape
the NWONE strategic plan.
A few of the recommendations include:
- Expand the NWONE membership both vertically and horizontally
across the continuum of care
- Focus on nursing leadership across the care continuum to
include care coordination and the role of the nurse navigator
- Increase strategic partnership with education colleagues
- Mobilize nursing leadership to use our collective voice,
knowledge, and power to participate and influence health care
reform
- Support the design of collaborative ambulatory residencies that
could be replicated
- Understand, articulate, and demonstrate nursing's unique
contribution across the care continuum
- Create a technologic infrastructure to communicate with nursing
across settings and disciplines on our website
Thank you to all who attended this energizing and powerful
day! We appreciate your generosity of time and commitment to
NWONE. If you are interested in attending a NWONE
invitational retreat in the future, please send an email to Erika
Wilczek at erikaw@wsha.org.
Eighteenth Annual
Fall Conference and Meeting of the NWONE Membership September
21-23, 2011
NWONE Fall
Program - This Magic Moment: Nursing's Strategic Leadership in
Transforming Health Care Delivery
The annual NWONE fall program and meeting of the membership was
held on September 21 - 23, 2011, at the Vancouver Hilton Hotel in
Vancouver, Washington. This event, a highlight of the year
for many NWONE members, is an opportunity for nursing leaders at
all levels and from every practice arena, to come together in
fellowship and support while learning from world class speakers on
health care topics of current concern.

This year's fall program theme, "This Magic Moment", capitalized
on the tremendous current transitions in health care, as
reform is implemented, and also referenced the opportunity for
nursing to play a mighty leadership role in the design of a
reformed delivery system. Attendees were encouraged to
not miss the opportunities for nursing leadership inherent in a
changing environment - and our high profile non-nursing presenters
strongly voiced the need for nursing to step up to local and
national leadership during this time. Speakers at the event
included
TR Reid, a correspondent,
reporter, and the best-selling author ofThe Healing of America: A
Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care,
- Monique Lambert a technology expert and medical ethnographic
researcher who shared her research on the tribal nature of nursing
and our opportunities as entrepreneurs to design the next best
products and systems for care delivery,
- Edward O'Neil, Professor in the Department of Family and
Community Medicine at UCSF, and Director of the Center for the
Health Professions created to assist health care professionals,
care delivery organizations, and public policy makers understand
the challenges and opportunities of educating and managing a health
care workforce capable of improving the health and well-being of
people and their communities,
- Jack Needleman, Professor of Health Services at the UCLA School
of Public Health and recent author of research published on the
correlation between nurse staffing and patient mortality, and
- Carol Bradley, Joanie Ching, Linda Tieman, and Paula
Gubrud-Howe, all from our membership, speaking about their work to
advance nursing in this climate of change.
In dialogue with the audience, Monique Lambert and the NWONE
leadership encouraged the development of an "incubator" where
nurses, as entrepreneurs, could test and market patient care
products and models of care design. Additionally a reframing
of our domain from hospital "centricity" to nurses as leaders of
the movement toward health care outside the walls of the hospital
was emphasized. Using the feedback from our dialogue with the
audience and NWONE membership, the organization plans a strategic
retreat in November of this year focused on nursing leadership in
ambulatory care and in communication with Dr. Lambert on the
possibility for forming an entrepreneurial "incubator" to develop
and launch nursing innovation.
Evaluations from the program and its three pre-conferences
communicated appreciation for a valuable and enjoyable event for
our local nurse leaders. We look forward to being together
again for the NWONE Spring conference and meeting of the
membership, March 15 - 16, 2012, at the waterfront Marriott in
downtown Portland, Oregon. All nurses are invited to
attend.

NWONE Position Papers
We are writing to you today to communicate the creation of two
new NWONE position statements (attached). In an environment
where there has been significant debate about the right approach to
protection from influenza for both health care workers, patients
and the community, and where we have faced difficult and litigious
debate over nurse rest periods and meal breaks, it seemed necessary
and appropriate for NWONE to state a position on these
issues.
Our discussion on both topics has been sensitive and
thorough. We recognize that our members are individuals with
varying views. Additionally we know that our health care
organizations, where many of you are employed, do not share one
position on these important issues. With those facts in mind,
and with the input of your NWONE board, the attached documents were
created and unanimously approved.
We provide these documents to you in the hope that they will be
helpful to your individual and organizational decision making as we
approach both the flu season and our legislative sessions.
Please feel free to share the documents as you find appropriate and
to also share your comments and feedback with us.
Thank you for the important work you do every day, on issues
such as these.
