Save the Dates! - Upcoming NWONE Events
Clinical Ethics and Moral Distress Clinical
Summit
In 2010, NWONE hosted three repeat sessions on Clinical Ethics and
Moral Distress. Kate Payne, RN, MSN, JD, a nationally known
speaker, consultant and expert in the field of clinical ethics was
the speaker for the series. She received rave reviews from
all who attended and NWONE received feedback from attendees that
thought this program would be beneficial for front line care
providers. Based on this feedback, we are delighted to invite
Kate Payne back and host this series again in 2011. The three
repeat sessions will be held on October 24, 25, and 26 in Portland,
Seattle, and Wenatchee. We hope that each of you will
encourage your front line care providers to attend this great
event. Please

Nursing
Salons
Interest in nursing salons has increased among NWONE
members. In June, Gini Graham hosted a nursing salon in
Beaverton, Oregon, Anne Shevlin hosted a nursing salon "how to"
during the Southern Regional Council Meeting in Medford, Oregon,
and Karen McHenry hosted a nursing salon in Seattle,
Washington. In July, Kelsey Rounds hosted a nursing salon in
Seattle, Washington and in August Gladys Campbell hosted a nursing
salon in Seattle, Washington. Not familiar with nursing
salons? Marie Manthey is the woman behind the idea. The
goal for the evening is to engage in thoughtful conversation about
the profession of nursing. Salons start by having each
participant "check-in" by responding to the following
question: "What is on your mind about nursing tonight?"
Once everyone has responded, the group enters into in-depth
conversation on any topics of interest. At the end of the
evening, each participant "checks-out" by responding to the
following question: "What is on your mind about nursing
now?" These simple questions provide thought provoking and
energizing conversation about nursing. Marie encourages salon
hosts to invite a diverse group of people to participate. She
says "It is the diversity of experience, education and interest
that makes these salons among the richest conversation any of us
have ever experienced." If you are interested in hosting a
nursing salon in your area, please contact Erika Wilczek at
erikaw@wsha.org or (206) 577-1825
and she can send out an invite to NWONE members in your area.
If you are interested in hosting a salon, but not sure how to start
please contact Erika Wilczek and she will put you in contact with
someone who can help! For more information about nursing
salons please visit
Marie Manthey's blog.
Upcoming Salons Dates

Washington Legislative Update

| As you may
know, NWONE has hired Jo Bell for NWONE Oregon State Government
Relations. Jo worked for NWONE in the past and we are so glad
to be working with her again. The NWONE Board of Directors
engaged Jo Bell so NWONE Oregon members could have up to date
legislative information. Jo has written a 2011
Legislative Summary for all health care related bills in Oregon
and an in-depth summary of House Bill
3650, Health Transformation Bill and Senate Bill 99, Health
Insurance Exchange Bill. For any questions about these or
other Oregon legislative issues, please contact Jo Bell jobell18@gmail.com. If
you are interested in joing the NWONE Healthcare Policy Commission,
please contact Erika Wilczek at erikaw@wsha.org. |
As you know,
Meredith Gould is the NWONE Chair for the Commission on Healthcare
Policy, Washington. In Washington, we closely partner with
the Washington State Hospital Association's Policy Team for
legislative activity. A 2011 Legislative Summary can be found
by visiting the WSHA

About Jo Bell
Jo Bell has a 15-year history of working with nurse executives in
Oregon, beginning when she was hired by the Oregon Association of
Hospitals and Health Systems (OAHHS). In her position with
OAHHS, she was the liaison to NWONE, working with Oregon nurse
executives and lobbying nursing issues in Oregon. (She
actually began her work with nurse executives in Oregon, working
with OONE for several years before the formation of NWONE.)
As a result of her long history with OAHHS, she
is not only very familiar with nursing issues, but also with a wide
range of other issues that impact hospitals and health care.
Another result of her time with OAHHS is her continuing involvement
in, and strong passion about resolving the health care workforce
shortages in Oregon. Her involvement has included working
with the ONLC, OCN, Oregon Healthcare Workforce Institute, and
other organizations involved with health care workforce
development. A second passion resulting from her role with
OAHHS is her involvement in the Telehealth Alliance of Oregon, to
promote the use of telecommunications to provide quality health
care to Oregonians.
Jo's background includes over 20 years
experience in government relations and association management for
non-profit organizations. She moved to Oregon 25 years ago
from Illinois, where she was born.
