Letter from Charleen Tachibana, NWONE President
To my colleagues,
You might notice this new format for our NWONE newsletter. To communicate better and more efficiently with each of you, we are test running an electronic newsletter format. During this test phase we are sending the newsletter out both electronically and by mail, as we do not have email address for all of our members. If you have not given us an electronic address we would love to have you forward that the Dane Karnick our Executive Coordinator at DaneK@WSHA.org. Because we normally include job posting in our newsletter, we are attaching those postings electronically, and are also sending them out to the membership to honor our commitments to those organizations who requested mailings. We hope that you like this change, but want to hear from you on whether this format better meets you needs for communication and information.
After completing my first quarter as your president, and having the honor of seeing so many of you at our spring membership meeting it is clear to me that the membership of NWONE is our strength and reason for existence, and that our primary obligation is to serve you well. Additionally it has become very apparent that if we are going to have a powerful collective voice on issues of mutual concern that our membership must be inclusive and that our membership volume must be substantial. It is for this reason that NWONE has set its focus on building the vitality of the organization with an emphasis on membership growth, the addition of new membership categories and by the expansion of service to the membership. You will hear in this newsletter about several initiatives underway to serve you differently, to serve you better and to recapture your commitment to and investment in NWONE. While your organization’s leadership works on these initiatives I am also asking for your help. If we are to build our membership volume, we need your help to reach out to those around you that are not currently NWONE members, and invite them to join.
Please note that membership is open to clinical and educational leaders as well as to front line managers and division directors. We are asking that each of you make a commitment to invite others to join our organization. If you are a CNO we ask that you consider signing your entire leadership team up for membership in our new group membership option (see this application described below). In our revised membership application, new members can note who referred them to NWONE and it is our intention to honor those who build the membership during this formal membership recruitment campaign. Please help us to ensure that NWONE, your organization, is as strong as it can be by helping to build our strength in numbers.
All my best to you as you enjoy this spring season.
Charleen Tachibana, Sr VP & CNO, Virginia Mason MC & NWONE President

Report From the Fall NWONE Board Meeting
The fall board meeting was held on March 8, 2007 at the Benson Hotel in Portland Oregon. The board consists of elected officers, commission chairs and regional council chairs, with the NWONE Executive Director serving in an ex-officio capacity on the board. The majority of the fall board meeting was focused on a review of the 2007 budget and in a revision of the 2007 strategic plan. This dialogue brought the group to consensus on the strategic priorities for 2007 and 2008 to include:
Enhancing organizational vitality – including the following action steps
o Create a strategic planning committee that would include both past and emerging/current leaders
o Revise the 2007 budget and enhance the budget oversight process of the Board of Directors
o Work with the Association of California Nurse Leaders to expand their work on the CALNOC database for Nurse Sensitive Outcome Indicators to the NW
o Strengthen the support and infrastructure for our regional councils, including the development of a Council Advisory Team leader (CAT) to coordinate communicate between Council Chairs, assess regions where councils are struggling, set standard agenda and record keeping templates for the councils and provide ongoing conference calls for the chairs
o Revision and expansion of organizational programming, based on member needs
o Revision and expansion of the organizations corporate sponsorship program to increase partnerships with industry and, when appropriate, financial support for programming
Develop future leaders to ensure a nationally recognized nursing leadership workforce in the Northwest region
Foster healthful environments
o Look specifically at the work already done by AONE and AACN on healthful and healthy work environments and “just culture”
Advance evidence based administrative & clinical practice
Foster proactive & strategic nurse leader involvement with regulatory & legislative activity in the Northwest
o Meredith Gould from the University of Washington Medical Center was nominated and approved by the board to Chair the Healthcare Policy Commission, replacing Connie Huber. Meredith’s goals for the commission are:
§ To increase commission membership
§ Provide education to all members related to the legislative process
§ Provide legal counsel relative to the status of NWONE as a 501C3 nonprofit
§ Identify members willing to do independent testimony and provide training resources for them
§ Create a connection to data driven, evidence based decision making when testimony is given
Additionally the board discussed that the 2008 AONE meeting will be in Seattle and that NWONE will be the host chapter. We will begin planning for our leadership role in the 2008 AONE convention immediately.
Nancy Moore gave a report from the Nominating Committee. This group is currently recruiting for members on the ballot for our Secretary-Treasure Elect position, President-Elect position Education Commission Chair and Healthcare Policy Chair.
Report from the Spring Membership Meeting
NWONE has two meetings of the membership each year. One at the annual Fall Retreat and the other at the annual Spring Medley. The spring membership meeting was well attended with over 70 people in present. After giving a report from the board meeting, and inviting Commission and Committee Chairs to report on the work of their groups, Charleen invited the members in attendance to engage in facilitated dialogue at their tables around 5 topics:
Membership recruitment
Participation in the 2007 AONE meeting
Participation and planning for the 2008 AONE meeting
Nominations for the 2008 ballot
Increasing Commission and Regional Council participation by members
Feedback on how we can serve you better.
Discussion from these topics brought forward three pages of creative and constructive suggestions for future initiatives and process changes. This input has been collated, shared with the board and presented to the specific leaders and Commission Chairs with accountability for defined work. Many new initiatives are driven by this input from the membership. The energy and enthusiasm of members attending the membership meeting was inspiring to many who attended!
Legislative Updates
With the strong interest in healthcare related legislation in both Washington and Oregon this session, many NWONE members have called our office asking for the NWONE “position” on various legislation. Because NWONE is a 501C3 nonprofit organization we are prohibited from spending a “substantial” amount of our time/resources engaged in legislative or lobbying activity. With our very small office staff (1.3 FTE) even a small amount of staff time can quickly become “substantial”.
It is for this reason that NWONE does not normally take position on legislative issues. NWONE is though, a source of information and dialogue on legislation. This information is provided so that each of you can be informed and individually active in supporting or opposing legislation that will impact your work environments. During this years legislative sessions we have provided the names of members who were interested in individually testifying on issues, have connected individuals to those who share their points of view/concern and have assisted members to build their own networks for proactive political action. To this end Meredith Gould the Chair of our Healthcare Policy Commission has re-engaged the membership of this commission around the routine, responsive and strategic work of healthcare policy. Her goals for the commission are outlined in the board report, above, and include building formal linkages and communication in both Washington and Oregon around each states legislative activities. If you have questions, concerns or want to be involved, please contact Meredith at mgould@u.washington.org. Also please note the conference call dates and times for this commission, list under Dates to Remember in this newsletter.
Report from the Membership Services Commission
After the spring membership meeting Laurie Brown, Chair of the Membership Services Commission reviewed the pages of input from the membership and set the following immediate goals for the improvement of membership services:
Create a new membership application brochure to include the following:
o An explicit invitation to membership to “nurse leaders”
o Membership categories to include:
§ Full membership
§ Graduate student membership
§ Academic membership
§ Retired membership
§ Honorary membership and
§ Affiliate membership
o Under “nurse leaders” to explicitly include educators, clinical nurse specialists, front line managers, house supervisors case managers, quality leaders who are nurses, nurse recruiters and consultants
o To include an affiliate membership opportunity to our industry partners and to community leaders
o To include both individual and group memberships to allow CNOs to give application and membership to their entire team, with a cost discount for groups of 5 or more members.
o To allow the identification of those who referred new members to NWONE
To accomplish these new changes a revised membership brochure has been completed, printed, and is ready for your use!
2. Provide increased support and structure for the hospital based “concierge program”. This program aimed at having one NWONE member in each of our constituent hospitals to promote and grow membership, partner with the CNO to build his or her support for membership and to provide feedback on membership status to the organization. To this end Laurie is assessing the availability of a “concierge” for each hospital and will personally function as the Concierge Advisory Team leader (CAT) for this program – leading routine conference calls, directing the concierge team to conduct similar activities and monitoring membership growth
3. Initiation of a formal Membership Recruitment Campaign with award given to the individuals and regions with the highest levels of member recruitment.
4. To send letters to all area hospital CNOs asking for their support in building membership at their facility. These letters will go out under the shared signatures of Charleen Tachibana, Laurie Brown and Gladys Campbell
NWONE Website Update
If you have logged on recently you may have noticed that our website is currently out of date.
At NWONE we recognize that our website is one of the ways that we attract new membership and that it also provides a source of information and support for existing members. To that end we are negotiating with our website services contractor to provide an upgrade of our existing website. With an upgrade we are hoping to accomplish the following:
Create a more visually appealing site with easier, more intuitive functionality
To allow full access to all areas of the site with the exception of formal organizational records (minutes etc) to all who enter on line, and eliminate the need to routinely use and remember an individual password
To provide one secure area on the site for members only and board members only
To allow for online membership applications and online registration for programs
To allow online access to our newsletter
To allow integration between the website, member data base and GroupWise functions
As you might guess what we can initially and ultimately accomplish for our website will be determined by cost. In the interim while we are negotiating, please be patient with the current site and its limitations
Member Database Update
Last year NWONE undertook an initiative to create a fully functional member database. Though that database came online in December we have experienced some continual glitches with the program we have purchased. Some of you have received dues notices when your dues are fully up to date, and we apologize for the inconvenience of those errors. We are working to eliminate errors in this system and to upgrade it to allow for an emailing function by member category (position, state, region etc) and to allow for the creation of list-serves and potentially chat-rooms as well as the online registration processes noted above. The extent of the revision we will be able to support is partially limited by cost, and also requires a review of regulations for the over-site of list-serves and chat-rooms. Please stay tuned as we seek to advance the services what we can provide for you.
